What if doing something good for someone else was as easy as paying for your morning coffee?

For many of us, the desire to help is there, but the moment often passes. We don’t always have cash on hand, and we’re unsure how to give in a meaningful way, or we simply don’t know where to start.

That’s where Mi-change comes in. And now, with SnapScan, supporting their mission is simpler than ever.

Making a powerful impact

Mi-change was founded on a clear and compassionate idea to make giving easier, more transparent, and more impactful.

Many people want to help those experiencing homelessness or vulnerability, but aren’t always sure how to do it in a way that truly makes a difference. Mi-Change bridges that gap with a voucher-based system that allows people to give in a structured, thoughtful, and dignified way.

Instead of giving cash directly, donors can provide vouchers that can be redeemed for essential goods and services at any U-turn or MES Homeless Support Centre, where voucher redeeming is available. More importantly, this system connects beneficiaries to organisations and support networks that can help create long-term, sustainable change.

Restoring dignity while meeting real needs

Mi-change addresses the complex realities of homelessness, poverty, and social vulnerability in South Africa. It goes beyond immediate relief and works to restore dignity.

Through their work, individuals can access food, clothing, essential items, and support services in ways that ensure they feel seen, respected, and supported.

Over the years, Mi-change has witnessed countless moments where simple acts of generosity have made a meaningful difference. While practical support is important, what often stands out most is the emotional impact of people feeling valued, cared for, and acknowledged. These moments are a powerful reminder that giving is not only about what is provided, but also about how it makes people feel.

Even more powerful is the way communities come together around this shared purpose, demonstrating that collective action can drive meaningful change.

The shift from physical to digital vouchers

Mi-change has already made a significant impact through physical vouchers, but the move to digital marks an exciting new chapter.

Digital vouchers eliminate the logistical headache of physical paper vouchers getting lost or damaged, making giving faster, more efficient, and accessible to everyone.

With SnapScan, supporting Mi-change fits right into your everyday routine. In the same way you’re grabbing a coffee at your favourite café or making an online purchase, donors now have the opportunity to give in the same way.

Simply open your SnapScan app and scan the QR code on their lanyard. A R15 contribution will automatically be preloaded, and you can complete the payment in the app.

Your payment will go towards the redemption of an essential service, including a meal, a shower, clothing, or a place to sleep. Vouchers are redeemable at all MES and U-turn service centres, ensuring support is directed towards meaningful, practical assistance.

By making generosity completely frictionless, this approach doesn’t just change how people give; it encourages more frequent giving, driving real scale and impact.

The challenges and the opportunity ahead

Like many organisations doing important work, Mi-change continues to face a few key challenges.

One of the biggest is raising awareness and helping people understand that there are alternative, more impactful ways of giving that can create long-lasting change. Alongside this, there is an ongoing need to secure resources and support to meet the growing demand within communities.

But within these challenges lies a real opportunity.

Over the next few years, Mi-change is focused on expanding awareness of its model, increasing adoption of its digital voucher system, and strengthening partnerships to help scale its impact.

These priorities all support their bigger goal of making giving more accessible, reaching more communities, and supporting more individuals in meaningful, sustainable ways.
